I don't wear them every day, and sometimes I'll only wear one - letting one eye handle distance vision with the lens, and letting the other eye use my normal near-sightedness for reading. So I go through contacts rather slowly, but I finally down to my last pair. Well, when I spoke to the person at LensCrafters, they told me that the contacts I'd been prescribed - CIBA Vision Spherical O2 OPTIX - had been recalled. This apparently happened about 6 weeks ago! I asked why I wasn't called - given that the defect on certain lots of the lenses could potentially harm the eye - and I was told that this would be "impossible". They promised me that there is no eye doctor in this country who would be able to do that. What? I'm thinking that it's a simple case of sorting a table, but it appears that the norm is for optometrists to keep only basic patient and appointment data online; the rest is only on paper. Wading manually through all of that paper to discover who is using a recalled product was "impossible". Wow. So on Wednesday I'll go in for a free appointment to be fitted with a different brand of lens. Well, "free" in that it won't cost me any cash. It will cost me time and a little frustration. I'm reminding myself to be thankful that I have vision and the means to afford eyeglasses and contacts. Comments : 1. Posted by Adi - website09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMIt is very frustrating being a Notes developer in this world. When things like that happen to me, I just want to whip out my laptop and pull up a database for them. Probably no more than a couple of hours (or less) needed for something as basic as simple patient data, including the lenses they use and the dates they came in for new orders. Apart from probably saving your eyes a lot of damage, imagine the sales value something like that could have.Sigh. As I said, it's tough knowing this powerful platform, isn't it.I really hope your eyes are all right, though.2. Posted by Joe Litton - website09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMAdi,YES! That is exactly how I was feeling. I was thinking how easy it would be to create an app to handle this ....whether Notes or based on an RDBMS or whatever. But I certainly don't have the time, and they are a very large chain of offices, so there was nothing to do but sigh. Fortunately, I don't use the contacts every day, so there was not much opportunity for any real damage.Cheers 3. Posted by Nathan T. Freeman - website09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMIronically, the system that I worked on in South Africa included a number of optomotrists. And yes, we tracked individual lens dispensing, so it would be a simple query. What's more, as a central switching service, we would have simply been able to do this for ALL of our doctors, probably in just a couple of hours.Joe, are you on vision insurance? You might just as well ask why your insurance provider didn't contact you. (pun intended)4. Posted by Esther Strom - website09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMSomething sounds fishy about what you were told, Joe. I've never been to any kind of doctor that didn't keep electronic records of prescriptions in a database - there are quite a few medical-industry-specific software systems out there, and from what I've seen you'd be able to search by prescription on all of them. I can't imagine a giant like LensCrafters wouldn't have a similar system in place. It sounds to me like someone screwed up. How litigious are you feeling? 5. Posted by Erll Dedman09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMDay before yesterday I developed a reddness in one eye - by the end of the day it was painful so i went to my doctor yesterday morning. That's when I found out about the recall of these Opix O2 lens. My lens were not in the lots recalled, but I have an ulcer on my cornea and no vision in one eye - you need to call your doctor if you use these Optix O2 lens - whatever the lot numbers6. Posted by Sarah09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMI was using those contacts too. My eye doctor kept expecting me to come in and get one pair of contacts each time I ran out! It kind of pissed me off. does anyone know what was wrong with the contacts to make them be recalled?7. Posted by Eyedoc from Fresno09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMThe O2 Optix contacts are actually very good contacts, but unfortunately, the recall has made them difficult to get temporarily. Here is the Ciba statement in regards to the contacts: CIBA Vision is conducting a voluntary trade-level recall from eye care professional, retailer and distributor inventories of select lots of spherical O2OPTIXв„ў (lotrafilcon B) contact lenses, distributed primarily in the United States, and to a lesser degree in other countries, excluding Japan. No other CIBA Vision lenses are involved with this recall. CIBA Vision has notified the appropriate health authorities of this voluntary trade-level recall and is currently notifying customers. This recall is voluntary, proactive, and represents a responsible course of action to assure our products consistently meet customer expectations. We are taking this action because we have identified that some lenses in these lots did not meet our standards for ion permeability, a material characteristic which contributes to lens movement on the eye. A medical assessment, confirmed by external experts, determined that the probability of a serious adverse event associated with use of lenses with reduced ion permeability is remote. However, these lenses may cause persistent discomfort and/or foreign body irritation, and superficial corneal staining may be observed. The medical risk associated with these signs and symptoms is low to negligible, and upon removal of the lens, they typically resolve within 2-24 hours. No serious adverse events have been attributed to this issue anywhere in the world. CIBA Vision has already implemented manufacturing process improvements, and the ion permeability issue has been addressed. However, product availability will continue to be affected. We recognize the impact of this recall and product availability issues on our customers and consumers and we appreciate their patience and continued support. We have already taken significant measures to build more capacity and strengthen our manufacturing and quality infrastructure. We are confident that over time all of these combined changes will give us the capacity and flexibility to meet the expectations of our customers in the future. 8. Posted by Del09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMThank God for forums like this, because this is the only site I could get any real information regarding these contacts. I also found out today when I went to order more from Costco that they were recalled. I the mean time I have been battling eye redness, two infections and eyes burning in the afternoons, but I though it was my eyes being tired or just getting to be more sensitive. I even changed to a more expensive cleaning solution and bought eyedrops. Bottom line, this has caused me pain and money already, and yet no phone call from my eye doctor. I am calling them on Monday to find out why they did not bother to call me about this! I am not angry that Ciba made a bad product, mistakes happen, but I am angry at the lack of information about it (their website only gives you a phone number to call, no real explanation or lot numbers for the ones affected). The O2 Optix website doesn’t even mention it. And the rest of the websites (1800contacts, etc..) just say they may be low on order due to a recall on some lot numbers. Granted I am not a huge computer person and did not spend that much time searching around, but that’s the point, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO! This info should be easily available! Thank you all for the information posted at least now I know what is going on. 9. Posted by Jody09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMI just received a call saying that my O2 Optix lenses had arrived and I could come pick them up. I called Ciba Vision's customer relations number and was told that new boxes of O2 Optix that are being shipped right now should be safe from the defects that led to the recall. If you have a box of these lenses with a green sticker on it, it has been cleared by Ciba.10. Posted by brian09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMWe should start a group lawsuit. My eyes have been really sore every time I wore my O2 Optix lenses and now I'm finding out that it wasn't me but it was the lenses. The only way I found out was because I ran out and went to another store to get a new perscription and more lenses. I'm very scared now that this might have cause some permenant damage to my eye :(11. Posted by Cheryl Summers09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMI ordered contacts and found out three weeks later that they had not been shipped to Walmart optical. I was on my last real pair since I don't order frequently and was frantic for contacts. Neither Walmart nor my optometrist notified me of the recall. Walmart finally admitted there had been a recall almost a month before. I was not told what the recall was for either. I would have asked for a different brand of contacts had I know. I am still not comfortable in my contacts and the new order has the green stickers. I have allergies and either they are really bad or I have cold in each eye right now.12. Posted by Emily Carmichael09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMI also had been wearing the O2 Optix lenses for about a year when I got tired of the redness, burning and not being able to wear them for a whole day. When i went to the Dr. he told me my eyes were red and irritated but prescribed a new lense for me to try. After a couple days I just couldn't take the lenses anymore, went back tot he Dr. and was told I had an infection and was sent to a specialis. The eye specialist tells me I have a viral infection and GPC which is caused by allergies to lenses or solutions. He also told me I may NEVER wear contacts again. THis is really annoying that contacts said to be the best new contact has done this. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one out there with these problems...but not happy that there are so many of us suffering.13. Posted by Karen Puckett09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMIt is totally amazing about the recall. I placed an order in December 2006 and starting wearing them and within two weeks I was at the eye doctors with an infection in my right eye. Not knowing about the recall at that time, I was given eye drops and about a week later I went back to wearing a new pair and the same thing happened. Again, another trip to the eye doctors. $200 later, to find out that the contacts I was wearing were in the lots that were recalled. Well guess who is going to flip for this bill, you got it, Ciba Vision. Due to the fact that I ended up having two eye infections, I can no longer wear contacts and had to resort back to the glasses. What a pain in the butt. Oh yeah, I will be sending the bill for these also. 14. Posted by Vincent Rafe09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMThank goodness there is forum for those who have experience problems with the O2Optix soft contact lenses. My story: I was prescribed the contact lense in December 2006. Recently, my left eye started to hurt. I thought it was caused by all of the late hours working in front of a computer. It got to the point that it was hurting so much that I made an emergency appointment with an optometrist (different optometrist than the one who sold me the lenses). It was at the visit that I learned about the recall, and I learned that the reason my eye hurt so bad is because of an abrasian on my left eye. In fact, my vision on my left eye has been slightly more blurry than my right eye. 15. Posted by Thomas09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMThe 02 optix are terrible. I have never suffered so much eye damage in my life. At the worst part of it, I couldn't even blink without my eyes hurting. That lasted a whole week, and I had to wear glasses. My eye was oozing out green pus because of the damage done by those contacts. I had to get some prescription eye drops that burned like hades and put them in every few hours. All in all, it was about three weeks before my symptoms were over. They were caused the contacts and nothing else. I truly don't understand why this recall did not receive more publicity. Because of the Optix, my eyes are still constantly dry, they cannot produce enough of their moisture. My doctor says it's only temporary, but it's been months and my eyes are still dry. Ciba has done very wrong in my opinion, and they are doing nothing for the people they have hurt. Is anyone else as upset?!??16. Posted by Jessica Herndon09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMI am in the process still since January of trying to get back my vision from these lenses. I found out about the recall via a letter 6 weeks after I had been having constant problems with the lenses. Having recently lost 1/2 of my thumb I thought I was causing the problems. I may have permanent damage to my eyes thanks to their timely notification of the bad lenses. I had 4 boxes of these bad lenses. Now they want me to return what is left of them. I have incureed thousands in eye doctor bills, and still can't see. UPSET? hah I am doing what I can to start a class action suit against CIBA now! I haven't been able to work for months as a result. 17. Posted by mike09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMI had the same probles as everyone else with the O2 optix. here is the lot numbers abs powers. Posted by Vincent 09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMHi Folks, Thanks for this site it is very helpful. This is the letter CIBA sent to Doctors. It includes the recall lot numbers. I too, "just happened" to find out about the recall. My teenage daughter has been wearing them and complaining , but I assumed her complaining was like everything else she was complaining of (teenagers!) anyway I feel like an ass, and I can not believe they did not choose to notify us, they sure the hell know how to get our money. They suck Have a great day. Medical Device Recall v02, Page 1 of 5 January 12, 2007 IMPORTANT – DEVICE PRODUCT RECALL ATTENTION: EYE CARE PRACTITIONERS, DISTRIBUTORS, RETAILERS O2OPTIXв„ў (lotrafilcon B) Soft Contact Lenses CIBA Vision Corporation is conducting a voluntary recall on select lots of spherical O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) soft contact lenses in the United States and other countries. We are taking this voluntary action because we identified that some lenses in these lots may fall below our standard for ion permeability, a material characteristic that correlates with lens movement on the eye. Reduced ion permeability in O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) lenses may lead to reduced lens movement, symptoms of discomfort and/or foreign body irritation. The potential medical safety risk to consumers posed by lenses with reduced ion permeability includes discomfort, foreign body irritation and superficial localized corneal staining. The possibility of occurrence of these findings is moderate. As with any staining of the corneal tissue, the risk of corneal infection is somewhat increased, although the probability is remote. This recall only affects the O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) lenses identified below. No other CIBA Vision product is affected by this recall action. This voluntary action is being conducted in the United States with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The affected O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) lenses were distributed between September, 2006 and December, 2006. The lots affected in this recall are all lots numbers starting with 6644001 to 6721262 with expiration dates starting from 2011/09 to 2011/11, and lot numbers 6626127, 6636101, 6637017, 6637019, 6637103, 6640120, 6640124, 6642109, 6642119, and 6643080, all with expiration dating of 2011/08 (detailed in the attached table). We are asking that you locate and return these lenses from your stock in accordance with the attached instructions. We recognize the inconvenience this causes you, your staff and your patients. However, this action reflects CIBA Vision’s commitment to high quality standards and ensuring that our products fully meet your expectations. You will receive a separate communication regarding O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) supply shortly. Please feel free to call our Customer Service Department at (800) 241-5999 or your CIBA Vision Sales Representative should you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, William D. Schaeffer Global Head of Quality CIBA Vision Corporation Medical Device Recall v02, Page 2 of 5 IMPORTANT – DEVICE PRODUCT RECALL O2OPTIXв„ў (lotrafilcon B) Soft Contact Lenses CLINICAL ASSESSMENT FOR THE EYE CARE PROFESSIONAL Ion permeability is a measure of the ability of sodium ions to permeate through a contact lens material. It has been shown, along with other factors, to correlate with lens movement on the eye, which is an important fitting characteristic. The O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) lenses with reduced ion permeability, subject to this recall, may cause reduced lens movement in some patients, possibly causing discomfort and/or foreign body irritation, usually within the first 1 to 4 hours of wearing the lens. Superficial, localized corneal staining may be observed in symptomatic patients. The symptoms diminish quickly upon removal of the lenses. In addition, signs and symptoms usually resolve in 2-24 hours. If the same lens is replaced on the eye, the same symptoms will typically reoccur within a very short period. The potential medical safety risk to consumers posed by lenses with reduced ion permeability includes discomfort and/or foreign body irritation and superficial localized corneal staining may be observed. As with any staining of the corneal tissue the risk of corneal infection is somewhat increased although the probability is remote (see summary table below). Medical Risk Probability of Occurrence with Reduced IP lenses Discomfort and/or Foreign Body Irritation Negligible Moderate Superficial Localized Corneal Staining Low Moderate Corneal Infection Moderate Remote Foreign body irritation and corneal staining are expected non-serious events for routine contact lens usage and can occur for various reasons, such as dust or particulate matter, lens tears or other mechanical type effects. The foreign body irritation that may result from lenses with reduced ion permeability increases in intensity while the lens is worn, necessitating prompt lens removal. The Package Insert and Patient Instruction Booklet advise practitioners and wearers to remove the lens in cases of such irritation. Wearers are advised to seek professional eyecare evaluation if the symptoms persist. No serious adverse events related to this issue have been reported on a global basis. We are presently aware of only seven (7) non-serious product complaints which are likely related to the use of O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) lenses with reduced ion permeability. I have tried giving my eyes a complete break from lenses for 2 weeks but after the break i still cant wear them with any comfort. When i do try to wear contacts it takes my eyes about 3 days to recover from the pain and redness. Any ideas on how to solve the discomfort?25. Posted by Karyn09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMHi! I went back to Lenscrafter's on April 26th to order another box of o2 optix's. Now, I also had this brand during the fall/winter with no complications, BUT I've been experiencing irritation with these new 02 contacts. I read through the above emails and my Lot# does not fall into the recall, but I am still experiencing dryness and irritation. I actually just took these out of my eyes as soon as I got home from work and that has been my process for the past three weeks. Typically, I can leave my contacts in overnight for several days. When I went to Lenscrafters to order boxes, I had to wait a week since known were on hand due to the recall. The representative didn't offer additional information about the recall until I asked pointblank and she mentioned the solution issue. I am wearing my glasses, returning these lenses and making an appointment with another optician. 26. Posted by Jessica 09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMLaurie, Thanks for the post I have contacted Jim Brown. I will gladly jump on this band wagon. I tried a friend of the family and got no where with him. Ciba recently offered me 237.50 for my damages. I had sent them copies of the bills I have incurred so far having my eyes treated, I am in the process of seeking yet another specialist, but don't have the money for it now. they also sent me a release form. Which I refused and I did not sign the release form. It was an insult, considering the damage to my eyes. horay for you!!! thanks for the info27. I bought 8 boxes of the recalled lenses, 4 of which I had used with significant and on going eye problems and bills$$$. I have filed an investigation with the FDA and contacted the corporate offices at CIBA and Vision Works. More than anything, I am fighting to get the public informed. As of May 26, Ciba posted a new web page on O2 Optix, new and improved, ha! Please write if anyone has made any progress with the FDA or with any retail optical centers i.e. Vision Works, also, any other info regarding getting the word out there for other contact wearers. Also, if anyone is successful in starting a class action suit, provide details. Thanks!28. Posted by Natalie - Montreal Canada09/06/2007 09:49:43 PMSo I thought there was something wrong with my contact solution because I had started using a generic brand. But once I started back on the old solution I was still experiencing problems. I ordered O2 Optix from Coastal Contacts, they have the green check mark on the side of the box but since I started on this batch I have been back to wearing glasses. Not 20 or 30 minutes after I put them in, I start to see cloudy. My eyes get red and the scary part is that the cloudiness takes about 2 to 3 hours to go away once the lenses removed. After reading all the other comments, I am scared I have permanently damaged my eyes and am waiting to see my eye doctor. Has anyone else had this fog in their eyes? My eyes don't hurt I they are just very dry and blurry when I put my lenses in. :- 29. Posted by Samantha09/06/2007 09:49:44 PMI am so glad that I found this blog about O2 Optix. For about 3 horrible weeks, I was convinced that I was going blind in my left eye. I went to the eye doctor (which, by the way cost me $70.00 even with insurance) only to find out that nothing was wrong with my eye site. All of my discomfort had been caused by the O2 Optix contacts! It was the eye doctor who told me that they had been recalled. This recall should have been advertised better. I could have avoided the discomfort, grief, time, and money!30. Posted by dana09/06/2007 09:49:44 PMi've been wearing 02 Optix without issues for a long time and i've checked my contact box for the lot and expiration date to see whether or not they're part of the recall and luckily they're not. however, i recently have had some irritation in my left eye so i stopped wearing my contacts and the redness went away. but i tried wearing my contacts again and the redness appeared in the left eye almost immediately. ive gone back to wearing my glasses but the redness in my left eye hasnt gone away yet. its irritated, dry, and at one point the redness spread from the corner of my eye to surround almost my entire pupil it seems as though its getting better but i'm afraid to wear my contacts now 31. Posted by Sam - Vancouver, Canada09/06/2007 09:49:44 PMI ordered a new batch of contacts earlier this spring. Previous order of O2 Optix, i've never had any dryness problems until recently. As many of you, i thought there was something wrong with me physically. I frequently would have very dry eyes, inside of upper eye lids would feel "itchy". When looking in the mirror, the contacts seem to get stuck in the upper part of my eye, inside the upper lid when i blinked. It seems to "stick" in the upper lid, and would then slowly come down into position at the eyeball. This, is what was causing the "itchy" or scratchy feel. Even after taking out the problem lens, my eye ball would feel scratched up, but eventually, over a couple of hours it would disappear. I tried cleaning my lenses, replaced with new ones, to no avail. It would happen inside one hour after putting the lenses on, to one or both, or it would happen near the end of day. There was no pattern. My eyes frequently felt dry. I've been wearing lenses for 24 years, and never ever had these problems. Finally today, i decided not to wear these O2 optix, and reverted back to my old daily replacement biomedics 38 lenses. Damn...no problems at all for the first time in 3 months. I thought since i'd turned 40, perhaps my eyes are beginning to feel dry. I thought perhaps it's the antihistamines i was taking for seasonal hay fever, just odd that it's never happened before.Until these last batch, these Optix were fine for me, and were comfortable and allowed me to wear lenses longer with whiter eyes.It wasn't me after all.32. 33. Posted by Erica09/06/2007 09:49:44 PMI am so happy to find other people who are having difficulties with these lenses! I had worn contact lenses (of another brand) previously for 13 years. I was given O2 Optix in September and by January, my eyes were unbearable! My vision was blurry, my eyes were red, my vision was decreased, and my eyes hurt! When I went to the optometrist in February, I was put back in glasses and my vision was tested to be 20/50 - which is just legal limit to drive here in Ohio! I was furious! My eye doctor has been phenomenal, going out of her way repeatedly to try and help my eyes. However, i have tried numerous eye drops - over-the-counter and prescription - I have been in and out of glasses and 5 different brands of contacts with no success. I have been diagnosed with a condition known as SPK. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I'm especially interested to see if anyone has found a successful treatment for this? I'm just very happy to find out that other people are going through the same crap that I'm dealing with!34. We are currently investigating companies who distributed Ciba Vision's recalled O2 Optix lenses AFTER the recall date. So far we are investigating Lens.com and Walmart for this practice, but we want to hear from you about your experiences with these and other companies whom you have bought recalled lenses from. If you purchased O2 Optix lenses AFTER the recall date, regardless of which company you purchased the lenses from, and regardless of where in the country you purchased them, please contact us. Posted by Mike09/06/2007 09:49:44 PMI am so glad I found this page. My optometrist prescribed the O2 optixlens back in 02/07. I had several of my old contacts (another brand)so I did not start using O2 optix until the last month. I have hadsevere irritation and redness first in the left and then in the right eye.I stopped wearing contacts for a week and it took about 3 days formy eyes to recover. When I tried wearing a new pair, the irritationand redness returned. I called up aclens.com and they agreed torefund me for 2 boxes. I did not know there was a recall on this brand. I will need to look over my order to see if any of the recalled ones were sold to me.37. Though my LOt number dose not match any of the Recall numbers listed above. I have severe irritation and redness first in the right and then in the left. I stopped wearing contacts for a week and it took about 3 days for my eyes to recover. When I tried wearing a new pair, the irritation came right back as well. At this point I am going to call my doctor and switch to a diffrent brand. 39. Posted by Mr. K09/06/2007 09:49:44 PMI used the recalled lenses for a while without knowing they were recalled. I wanted to tear my eyes out. I had one box for each eye that did not have SKUs that were recalled, but they're an issue too.Ciba is having serious issues40. Posted by Christina09/19/2007 07:50:03 AMI was recently prescribed O2 Optix lenses -- I wore them just fine for about a week, and now I can't wear them for more than three hours without getting scratchy pains and redness. I actually left work to take them out today. My lot #'s weren't on the recall list, but it looks like a lot of people have problems with these lenses in general. I'll be exchanging my unused box for the contacts I used to use. :)41. Posted by debbie09/26/2007 11:34:22 AMI just recently had SPK and I thought it was becuase I switched contact soultions. Turns out I too wear the O2 Optix contact lenses. My eyes were blood shot every day and I was in so much pain. Even artifical light would kill me. I thought it was allergies but I had to go on a steroid eye drop due to major damage to both my corneas. My contacts dont appear to be in the recall. After 2 weeks of steroid eye drops and non preservative wetting drops my eyes have healed. but the pain was so so bad.
